I’m a semi-big fan of steam-punk. Semi, because whilst I love the aesthetics and the innovation, I can’t ever really get too excited about a style that is so fundamentally retro. I mean, taking the unused, unwanted and unneeded and crafting them into something unique is a fantastic effort, and some of these creations are truly inventive.

It’s a very romantic approach, combining the sensorial values of a smog-spread, gas-lit Victorian street with the cutting edge neuromancy of a William Gibson novel to create a tech-noir combination of modern and mouldy. I guess for me, the problem comes with the very nature of retro – by definition it’s too backward looking. I’ve always been a bit more of a shiny steel guy, a bright chrome and light man (even though I know that Utopia is a book and Dystopia is the reality).

That said, these steam-punk inspired earrings are very nice. Courtesy of Enlyl’s Realm. I’m a sucker for these not so much for the fact they are keys, but the fantastic backgrounds! Love those letters… They come in a range of colours so check ‘em out and take your ears back in time.
