“Sometimes it is harder to deprive ourselves of a pain than of a pleasure.”

F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tender is the Night

A beautiful quote and one that certainly rings true – how often do we persist in negative, unnecessary feelings simply because the pain they provide is somehow a surety, a certainty. To suffer is to be seen to be noble; to celebrate, to be frivolous. Pain is the pivot on which we leverage our interpretation of the world, and through its dark glass we observe and understand the potentials of pleasure.

Humankind has always sought to manage and control pain and entire industries exist to treat it. And thus, the pain-killing earring is born! The very talented Becky Stern has created these Vicodin earrings. Now, I’ve never had Vicodin, but I had morphine once and it was like sailing on a cloud of cucumbers crashing into crystal castles. Or something like that. So I imagine Vicodin is the same. How much fun to have a ready supply hanging from the ear when the torturous grind of day-to-day existence becomes too much!

But remember kids; all pain is helpful – it’s a warning, a reminder, an affirmation of your very being on this mortal coil. Celebrate the pain! Go cut yourself just to remind yourself you are live! Feel the pain, feel the misery – aah, it’s good to be alive!
